This blog is an opportunity for me to share the journey Christina, HJ and I are on.
We were doing radical things and I was getting texts like “I hear you’re moving”, “I saw this item on Marketplace/Kijiji, what’s up?”
I started a text blast, but it grew too large and folks wanted to be able to go back a text or two. Hence, the blog. It’s the story of where we’ve come from and where we’re going.
I’ve never minded being on the fringe, but I think at first, Christina did.
One of the things that I noticed about people who are not comfortable being on the fringe was that they were not comfortable being on the fringe because of what other people thought or what other people were doing.
This attitude is poison.
Do you really want to be remembered as somebody who blended in? Made no waves, lived an average life? Normal sucks. Normal is pay cheque to pay cheque, borrowing money, having a 50/50 chance on your marriage...I don’t want a thing to do with normal.
I have had a nagging regret about our journey - we didn’t celebrate our small wins. As we eliminated small credit cards, small loans, small lines of credit, we didn’t pause to give ourselves a pat on the back - in some ways, we did ourselves a huge disservice.
In late 2019, Christina and I paid down our third smallest debt and moved on to the car, and a loan.
There’s not an inkling of “his and hers” in this.
We’re getting this done. We’re learning to celebrate our wins, and that’s how we come up for breath; look at old budget spreadsheets, remember old minimum payment amounts - look at you, look at how far you’ve come!
