As always, opinions are my own.
“I don’t care what other people think of me”.
This is a lie we often tell ourselves. It’s hard! We DO care what other people think of us, we do care how we look to other people and we do have a hard time getting past this.
Breaking past your image - getting over yourself - is prerequisite to having money. You will not have money if you’re competing with neighbors, if you’re measuring yourself against other people’s homes, other people's property.
Fake rich is a new/old theme that I keep seeing.
As a retail salesperson I get the opportunity to have conversations about payment methods all the time.
I’m seeing it so frequently, it’s almost laughable when people say that they’ll “give me [their] card number right now!” - credit cards are the cigarette of the financial world.
The people who are getting the best deals aren’t the people running three different credit cards to pay their bill. Credit isn’t part of the conversation.
“Fake rich” is a wave of people who are spreading themselves financially thin in order to facilitate keeping up with neighbors, relatives, etc.
As we downsized and started thinking differently about money, Tina and I both struggled with image.
Then it dawned on us as we started to make progress - we hadn’t been keeping up a facade of wealth at all. Folks who really cared about us admitted to being deeply worried about our finances and were grateful that we were getting on track. There was no “keeping up appearances” - folks can count.
If you’re scared of making some changes, don’t be. “Normal” is broke.
